Gallery Madera presents re-ART '08, October 16 – November 29, a juried art exhibition about re-USING, re-NEWING and re-THINKING our throw-away minded culture. As Americans, we produce on average 4 ½ pounds of garbage each day and for every can of trash we haul out to the curb, 70 cans of waste were produced "upstream" to make the junk we are throwing away. It's time to re-CONFIGURE our mindset, to re-EVALUATE our priorities!
What better way than with ART?
Gallery Madera is seeking entries of original art made from salvaged or landfill/recycle center bound materials.
Artworks should consist primarily of recycled material with an emphasis toward function and intent for permanence (in other words, no throw-away installation works, please). Art will be for sale with a portion of proceeds going to local charities focused on fostering sustainability and healthy, lasting prosperity grounded in community.
This year the beneficiaries of our event will be the Tacoma Food Co-op and the Sierra Club ZERO Waste Committee. Being an artist-owned gallery we keep our regular commissions low, 30%. We are asking artists to join us in donating 15% of the sale price of the artworks. This will leave 55% of the sale price for the artists and 30% for the charities!
Deadline for entries is Saturday September 20. Digital images of original artworks may be emailed to gallerymadera@gmail.com or delivered on disk to Gallery Madera 2210 Court A, Tacoma 98402. Multiple entries encouraged. There are no entry fees. Please name each digital file with your last name and title of artwork. Also please include a submission list that includes your name and contact information, titles, medium, dimensions and suggested retail price.
Re-ART '08 will be juried by 3 individuals well immersed in the energies of the Tacoma art scene as well as the finer details of waste reduction/reallocation . They are: Julie Bennett owner of Tacoma's Urban Exchange - an urban oasis of new and recycled clothing for women and men, Paula Tutmarc-Johnson owner of Two Vaults Gallery, a REAL fine art gallery gracing the slopes of Tacoma and Rick Semple – artist and notorious Goodwill and Re-Store frequenter.
We will be hosting a gala artists' reception for re-ART '08 on Saturday October 18 from 3:00 – 7:00 pm (please note change of date). Artists are encouraged to attend!
