We Are Incorporated!! The TFC is legit.

The Tacoma Food Co-op has been officially incorporated as of June 26th. This will allow us to begin doing things that businesses do. Our first order of business is to set up our own bank account so that we can start accepting funds. Further on down the line, we will be ready to conduct other business activities: taking out loans, filing tax returns, etc.

Although we are incorporated, we still have not finalized our bylaws. These are the ground laws under which the co-op will operate. A lawyer who specializes in cooperatives prepared a draft for us, but there remain a few details to iron out.

Thank you to all of you who have supported us in this endeavor. We are excited to continue to work in cooperation will all of you as we persevere along on this journey. Don't forget to stop by and visit us on July 19th in People's Park at 4:00 p.m. as we begin fundraising and gaining support for a local food cooperative.  Come learn more about the exciting road ahead!

TFC Sponsors July Green Drinks

Tacoma Green Drinks
Thursday, July 17
5:30-8:00 pm

The Tempest Lounge, 913 Martin Luther King, Jr. Way, Tacoma

Join us Thursday, July 17, when the nascent Tacoma Food Co-Op sponsors our monthly Green Drinks gathering. This month we’ll hang out at The Tempest Lounge, 913 Martin Luther King, Jr. Way (www.tempestlounge.com), in Tacoma's fabulous Hilltop neighborhood. Green Drinks will precede the co-op's fundraising event at People's Park (opposite The Tempest) on Saturday, July 19.

Food cooperatives are customer-owned businesses that provide grocery items of the highest quality and best value to their members. The Tacoma Food Co-op will be a retail grocery store committed to consumer education, product quality, and member control. The member-owners of the co-op will support local family farms and be an anchor in the community for awareness and education on all things related to health, sustainability, and consumerism. (Yes, the folks from the co-op reassure us that it is possible to be responsible consumers.) Their home on the web is currently being constructed and can be found at www.tacomafoodcoop.com.

The co-op steering committee has just completed incorporation, is putting the finishing touches on the bylaws, and has a formal membership structure that will be outlined in detail at their big July 19th event. Folks from the co-op will be available at Green Drinks (and again on the 19th) to answer your questions, concerns and suggestions.

EcoBags Reusable Produce Bags

Looking for an alternative to plastic produce bags? I have been meaning to write about these awesome reusable produce bags since I bought them on Delight.com six months ago. I love them and I'm often asked about them when I'm in the checkout line. In fact, the last time I was at Terry's Berries the woman ringing me up took down all the info about them and said she wanted to feature them in the next newsletter. So, here's the scoop.

For only $15.50, you get 4 high quality organic cotton bags. Two are large bags (13" x 17") and two are medium (10" x 12") mesh net sacks. They are all lightweight, but can take a lot of heavy fruits and veggies. I've washed them several times now, and they go through the washing machine wonderfully. Since they're lightweight, you don't need to worry about them adding much to the scale and there's no need to take your produce out for weighing.

Happy shopping!
