New Website

Hey folks!  Our new website is looking good.  Things are being updated on a pretty regular basis so keep checking it out at tacomafoodcoop.com.  One of the greatest things about the new website and something I know many of you have pointed out were the broken links to the membership page.  Well, that link has been fixed and you are now able to print out a copy of the membership form and mail it in to become a member.  Spread the word!  Thanks for all you do as members and friends of the TFC.  We appreciate you all.

Great-looking website, but I couldn't find the co-op's address anywhere! Also, does it stock local, humanely-raised dairy products (eggs and cheese)?

Thanks,

~~Cheryl

Oops, I forgot to check the box to receive email follow-ups... there now, done. :-)

LuckyCharm,

You couldn't find an address because there's no store yet -- the co-op is still gathering members and raising money so that it can start up. I'm not closely involved, but I'm a member and hope they're making progress toward opening a store!

Thanks for replying. I was afraid of that... So, suppose I become a member and pay the fee -- can I request a refund in the event I get too impatient and give up?

The membership is 100% refundable. We would very much love to have you as a member and hope that you can be patient with us, because we cannot open unless we have a certain amount of members. Thanks for the interest.

What's a "certain amount" of members? And what's the membership charge?

the membership fee is $100, but check out the website, www.tacomafoodcoop.com there is information about membership on the site.

Thanks for the reply. I do understand the concept of a co-op. Now, this one's been in the making for 2-1/2 years, right? How much money is needed to launch it? How close is it to that goal now? Is there any benefit to joining now versus waiting until it's up and running? Is it going to be guaranteed to stock local produce, especially humanely-raised eggs like from Meadowwood dairy in Enumclaw? (That's my main motivation for seeking a co-op -- local, humane food choices. Unfortunately, I cannot often make it out to Enumclaw for my dairy purchases!)

Thanks for any info you can provide.

The main benefit of joining the TFC now is to boost numbers. In order to open the doors we must have a solid member base of about 2600 (we are currently at about 200). If everyone waited until we had the doors open to join, they might never open.
A very large goal of the TFC is to provide healthy local foods to everyone. Therefore you can expect foods grown by people just around the corner in an extremely responsible fashion.

If we're at less than 10% of the needed members this far into the process, how are we going to get there in this economy? Is any thought being given to starting smaller and working into a full-fledged co-op?

There are definitely talks of doing some small things until we get the store opened. We will hopefully have some ideas and other up and coming events being posted in the next month.

I'd like to link our organic garden club to your website. When the heck is the coop going to open anyway????

Dan Voelpel reported in the Trib. that the city is looking to lease part of the remodeled Park Plaza South to a grocery store. They should donate it (or give very low rates) to the TFC!

LuckyCharm said...

Amen, mig! Who can go to them to request this?

I cannot see your website at all. The site comes up with domain name expired...sigh. Really would like to know more information.

I get the same thing, PJ. Frankly, I don't think Tacoma has what it takes to maintain a food co-op. There seems to be no organized publicity/fundraising effort. Offers of help go unanswered. I guess for now we'll have to go to Eatonville or Seattle for our co-op needs.

Here's the Eatonville co-op's website. My brother works there one or more days a week. Seems to be thriving.

The link for the membership application is down.

This is a known issue, Jennifer. I believe it's being worked on. Thanks for your feedback!
